vision and values

We want all children in the Baltimore metropolitan region to access books and literature that reflect their diverse backgrounds and experiences.  We believe that every child deserves to find joy and pride in reading, sharing books, and telling stories.

Representation

We work to advance diverse representation in children’s literature and partner with schools and community based organizations to increase youth access to diverse books.  We center the talents and stories of creatives traditionally marginalized across the publishing industry and education sector.

We want every young person to be able to see themselves and their experiences in a book, and if that story doesn’t exist that young people have the resources to tell that story themselves.

expression

“Literacy is the way that we interact with the world around us, how we shape it and are shaped by it. It is how we communicate with others via reading and writing, but also by speaking, listening, and creating. It is how we articulate our experience in the world and declare, “We Are Here!”

Baltimore Read Aloud creates spaces for youth and adults to explore literacy in all its forms.   We embrace diverse forms of expression – storytelling, spoken word, dance, music, and more – to connect with young people.

community

We support and convene the community of caring adults who value childhood literacy: parents, caregivers, educators, librarians, and young readers.

We create courageous spaces for multiple, diverse perspectives to join and work together to foster childhood literacy (in all forms) and transform literacy efforts.
